Flexible endoscopes are highly delicate pieces of equipment and, unfortunately, vulnerable to damage. Normal wear and tear as well as physical trauma can lead to trouble. Current reprocessing guidelines require that all endoscopes be inspected to ensure they are visually clean and free of damage. In this learner paced continuing education activity, participants will review the common types of damage that can be detected using a thorough visual inspection routine. Attendees will learn how to properly handle an endoscope in order to avoid damage during routine use and reprocessing.

This learner paced education activity is intended primarily for RNs with a responsibility for or an interest in the proper handling of flexible endoscopes. The presentation will also be of interest to allied healthcare personnel and MDs.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1) Review the common types of flexible endoscope damage that can be detected using a thorough visual inspection routine in GI Endoscopy

2) Discuss tools available to perform external and internal GI Endoscope inspection

3) Demonstrate proper handling of a flexible endoscope in order to avoid damage during routine use and reprocessing in GI Endoscopy

Recorded webinars must be watched in their entirety and cannot be fast-forwarded. In order to save video progress, participants should register/sign in before starting videos. Once the video is complete, participants will complete the evaluation and post-test. A passing score of 8/10 is required to earn a certificate. The post-test can be retaken until a passing grade is achieved. Reviewing the video before retaking the test is available, and fast-forwarding is enabled once the video has been completed. Once the test is passed, a certificate of completion will be available for download.

Upon successful completion of the entire program, achieving a score of 80% on the post test, and submission of required documentation, participants will be granted 1 contact hour CNE credit. No partial credit will be granted.

According to the criteria of the American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN), contact hours earned in this activity are considered GI Specific for the purpose of recertification through the ABCGN.

This program has been pre-approved by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) for 1.0 hour.

This program has been approved by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) for 1.0 hour.

1. 1. Successful completion: Participants must complete the entire program, register, achieve a score of 80% on the post-test and submit required documentation.

   2. Conflict of interest: Planners disclose no conflict of interest. The speakers disclose salary or honorarium from the commercial support entity; they have signed a statement agreeing to present material fairly and without bias.

   3. Commercial company support: Fees are underwritten by education funding provided by Boston Scientific.

Participants successfully completing the activity and submitting required documentation will be permitted to print a certificate of completion. Participants are advised to retain the certificate for eight years following activity completion. Certificates will be available in the participant dashboard.
