Course Overview
General
Cleaning and reprocessing of medical devices are critical processes contributing to patient safety and infection prevention, but what cleaning agents should be used? In this one-hour CNE activity, the speaker will discuss various detergents and cleaning agents designed for surgical instruments and flexible endoscopes. S/He will discuss mechanisms of action, best practices and the challenges faced by participants in the field, as they determine which detergents or cleaning agents meet the needs of their departments.
Target Audience
This faculty-directed education activity is intended primarily for RNs with a responsibility for or an interest in providing safe and effective processing of medical devices. The presentation will also be of interest to allied healthcare personnel and MDs involved in endoscopy.
Learner Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1) Discuss the importance of cleaning and reprocessing surgical instruments and flexible endoscopes.
2) Describe detergents and cleaning agents used in the sterile processing department for cleaning and reprocessing surgical instruments and flexible endoscopes.
3) Review best practices for cleaning and reprocessing surgical instruments and flexible endoscopes.
Teaching Methodology
Recorded webinars must be watched in their entirety and cannot be fast-forwarded. In order to save video progress, participants should register/sign in before starting videos. Once the video is complete, participants will complete the evaluation and post-test. A passing score of 8/10 is required to earn a certificate. The post-test can be retaken until a passing grade is achieved. Reviewing the video before retaking the test is available, and fast-forwarding is enabled once the video has been completed. Once the test is passed, a certificate of completion will be available for download.
Accreditation
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 08747, the District of Columbia Board of Nursing, Provider Number 50-574, the Florida Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 50-574 and the Georgia Board of Nursing, Provider Number 50-574.
ABCGN: According to the criteria of the American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses (ABCGN), 1 hour(s) earned in this activity are considered GI Specific for the purpose of recertification by contact hours through the ABCGN.
CBSPD: This program has been pre-approved by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution for 1.0 hour.
HSPA: This program has been approved by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association for 1.0 hour.

1. Successful completion: Participants must complete the entire program, register, achieve a score of 80% on the post-test and submit required documentation.

Certificate Replacement
Participants successfully completing the activity and submitting required documentation will be permitted to print a certificate of completion. Participants are advised to retain the certificate for eight years following activity completion. Certificates will be available in the participant dashboard.
