Flexible endoscope reprocessing has been identified by the ECRI Institute as the number one patient safety issue.   Researchers involved in flexible endoscope reprocessing have identified human error as a leading contributor to mistakes made in endoscope reprocessing.  This one-hour continuing education program will provide information concerning human errors that have been observed or documented by researchers throughout each critical touch point in endoscope reprocessing.  Criteria for endoscope reprocessing validations, competency development and work processes will be discussed.  The participant will leave the course understanding the multiple steps required for traceability; recognizing where human error can occur in flexible endoscope reprocessing and identifying the technologies that can improve patient safety through effective traceability. Further, the participant will leave with the tools to advocate for improved patient safety, handling medical devices and flexible endoscopes.

This CNE activity is intended primarily for RNs with a responsibility for or an interest in endoscope processing and ensuring safe patient care in the endoscopy suite. The presentation will also be of interest to allied healthcare personnel and MDs involved in endoscopy.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Review patient safety issues related to GI and other flexible endoscope processing.
2. Discuss most frequently identified human errors at each critical touch point in processing GI and other flexible endoscopes
3. Explain methods for determining measurement criteria for competency and validation of work processes in flexible endoscope processing.

Participants will complete the recorded webinar learning activity. They will view the presentation, then register to complete the evaluation and take the post-test on the website. They will submit the documentation as directed. A bibliographic reference is included for those wishing additional information.

Upon successful completion of the entire online program, achieving a score of 80% on the post-test and submission of required documentation, participants will be granted 1 contact hour. No partial credit will be granted.
